We are excited to announce that Flying Pixels is now open! Try it for yourself on the artists mezzanine, and then view your creation online. Flying Pixels is a collaboration with John Toenjes, a composer with Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
Flying Pixels lets children paint with pixels while composing music on a digital palette. To begin, pick up a spray can, choose colors from a large palette, and press the spray button while waving the can to paint an image electronically on a large canvas screen. As different colors are selected, different instruments are heard in an ever-evolving soundtrack, encouraging further artistic reaction to both sound and image. Often, children become so inspired by the combination of painting and music, they dance while painting. It is an opportunity for children’s creativity to shine while they learn, totally immersed in the “action painting” experience.
Once the spray can is placed back in its holder, the image is automatically saved to disk, and uploaded to a web page. Artists and family can then later view and print their creations from a growing online gallery. During its first run, one woman returned time and again with her grandson to create images to print at home for gifts and to make him proud of his artistic ability!
